Chapter Twelve

Noah

Noah’s coded message snapped Casper’s head up, the indication understood. She hated that series but agreed to watch the movies for his sake.

Pulling her hand back, she wiped it on the panting man’s shirt then stuck her crimson-stained fingers in her pocket.

Noah kicked the gun farther from his adversary’s reach then yanked the prick’s shoulder forward where he sat against the wall to see if he carried a backup weapon. “This guy’s clean.” He watched Casper take a half step back from the kidnapper and tug on Michael’s shirt.

“Listen, we’ve got company coming, Michael. Whatever you do or say, don’t expose your ability. To. Anyone. We think the ranger on this case is dirty. You could end up in an underground six-by-twelve cell where they poke, prod, and test you to extinction.”

“What? Who are you people?”

“Friends or enemies, your choice. At this point, anyway.” Casper kept her warning low, watching the mouth of the alley.

“O-okay. Got it. Damn. I thought you were cool before, but now…”

A low hiss rumbled from Noah’s chest before he could clamp down on it. He well remembered the wonder of discovering Casper’s abilities.

Two familiar faces came into view.

“Aw, what a disappointment. And your teachers said you were capable of great things, Michael.” Ranger Landers studied the scene and made a sucking noise between his teeth. “My folks used to always say, ‘You’ll adopt the habits and characteristics of your associates.’ Looks like you’ve taken a step down in life.”

“Well, if it isn’t my least favorite Texas Ranger and his sidekick, the state investigator. What brings you guys to the alley? Looking for food scraps? Some shadows to chase, perhaps?” Casper stared when the Texas Ranger held out his hand in greeting.

He retracted it shortly thereafter when no one returned the physical greeting.

“We’ve been trying to keep an eye on your friend here. Didn’t want him to fall into the wrong hands again.” Ranger Landers side-glanced Michael. “You all right, son?”

“Yeah, these two thugs work for Santiago Escobar. They tried to kidnap me. Again.”

“Again?” Investigator Burrows asked with a frown. “You said you weren’t sure this morning who took you.”

“I’m sure now. They admitted it.”

“Sure your classmates aren’t putting ideas in your head? I don’t think I’d take advice from them if I were you. They’re heading for nothing but trouble.” Landers bent over the downed man beside Casper and tugged at his shirt to straighten it. A smear of crimson marred the light green cloth.

“Now, now, ranger. That’s sliding into defamation of character, I do believe. You wouldn’t want to get reprimanded by your supervisor, would you?”

“If not for them, I’d be in the back of a van with a bag over my head and a needle sticking in my arm.” Michael took a step back from Landers as if judging his character and finding it short of the mark.

Noah moved to take a protective stance beside Casper. The state investigator seemed calm enough, but something wound Landers up tight.

“Why’s this guy paler than a ghost and drenched in sweat? How strange.
